Shiqian Puppet Show

Brief introduction

Shiqian puppet show is a captivating traditional puppet drama that has been handeddown through generations in Shiqian County, Guizhou Province. It’s interesting to notethat Shiqian is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province and falls under the Tongren region. What’s even more impressive is that on May 20, 2006, the State Council ofthe People’s Republic of China recognized the Shiqian puppet show as a national intangibleculturalheritage,withtheheritagenumberIV-92.

Expression forms

The captivatingShiqianpuppet show belongs to thefolk puppet opera drama, a dramatic form where actors manipulate wooden dolls behind the scenes while singing withmusic. Shiqian puppet is a stick head puppet, with the headand hand made of white wood, and the head and neck being about 15cm long, respectively carved with “sheng,dan,jing,mo,chou”.

Representative inheritor-Rao Shiguang

The important characters of the show include Rao Shiguang, who is a representative inheritor of Shiqian puppet show and one of the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage inheritors. He began to learn puppetry in 1953 and became the inheritor of the fifth generation of puppetry.

Most of the plays of Shiqian puppet show are based on historical material. The aria music ofShiqian puppet show is the main form of local and style characteristics. Itcan be divided into two sub-systems:“Gao Qiang”and“PingTan”. The representative plays includeThe Second Palace,The Long Board Slope, andPassingthe Five Pass,LihuaRecruitment,Xue Rengui Expedition to the EastandThe Seal of God.

Unfortunately, the inheritance of Shiqian Puppet Show is facing a crisis, as most young people today are more interested in popular culture than traditional culture. Therefore, it is very important to encourage young generations who are proficient in learning to inherit Shiqian Puppet Show.

Function

Shiqian Puppet Show is primarily used to make and fulfill wishes, such as praying fora son or praying for longevity. Once the wish is granted, the troupe is requested to perform the puppet show to fulfill the wish.

Cultural significance

Shiqian puppet show possesses rich and unique national plastic arts and clothing cultural values, and it contributes to the development of China’s puppet art. Additionally, it is beneficial for the study of education methods of contemporary ethnic minorities in China. I hope more people can come to appreciate and support this important cultural tradition.
